Support the Saddleback College Shayan Mazroei Memorial Endowed Scholarship with a 100% tax deductible donation

Educate. Don’t discriminate. That’s the message behind Saddleback College Shayan Mazroei Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund. In light of many racially-charged events that have happened across the world and right here in Laguna Niguel. On September 7 2015, 22-year old Iranian-American Saddleback College engineering student Shayan Mazroei was the victim of a hate crime. For this reason, it is important for the Mazroei family to honor their son’s name by attempting to make our communities more tolerant.

But, here’s the thing. It’s not simply a message of tearing down color barriers and fighting racism. What was once masked behind coded whispers about immigration and 'those communities', is now being discussed openly in the news and throughout our communities. Unabashed racist and xenophobic assaults are on the rise throughout the country. This has too often leads to death and violence against people of color, in particular against people of Middle Eastern decent.

The Mazroei family believes that structural racism perpetuates the inequalities that threaten the well being of everyone in our community. To signal to the entire community that they are committed to eliminating those inequalities and eliminating racism, they want to open up a much broader conversation with this unique scholarship opportunity. If you think about it, many people have been victims of stereotypes or have made assumptions about others at one time or another. It may seem harmless, but words and labels can cause serious damage. And sometimes, we don’t even realize that we're inflicting pain on others. But when good people come together and proactively stand up to racism and xenophobia, change can be made. And while you're helping to break down barriers and open minds, you might just be rewarded, too. So, find your voice and share it with Mazroei family. Who knows? You could be their next scholarship recipient and help make the world a better place for everyone.

The Mazroei family is proud to announce the Shayan Mazroei Memorial Endowment Scholarship Fund. Every year, two (2) Saddleback College students who are doing exceptional work in the community will be awarded this scholarship. This memorial fund provides scholarships to students who are actively working for peace and anti-racism on the campus of Saddleback College and in the community.

Applicants must be full time Saddleback College students and write an essay about their community service involvement regarding diversity and multiculturalism.

We request that in lieu of flowers that people support this scholarship fund by making a tax-deductive donation to the Saddleback College Shayan Mazroei Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Thank you,

The Mazroei Family
